• Over the summer we plan to make some improvements to the Treetops Studio in preparation for the new season. This past season we sold out six out of ten concerts, doubling our audience and support base, and we also brought to the area some of the most talented young chamber musicians in the country through our J. C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition. What a great year! We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Opening Night concerts on September 14 & 21!

This season the Treetops Chamber Music Society introduces one of its most diverse programs to date, including its first commission, from Stamford-based prize-winning composer Cristina Spinei, for soprano, clarinet and piano.

The Treetops Chamber Music Society is a unique place to experience chamber music, where outstanding performances are presented in an intimate setting. Founded in 2006, Treetops CMS is devoted to bringing world-class chamber music and musicians to the Greenwich-Stamford area. Its main stage is the former art studio of American artist Louis Schanker, within the historic Treetops Estate. Treetops CMS has presented the New York Woodwind Quintet, Harpsichordist Anthony Newman, the Shanghai Quartet, artists from the Met Orchestra and outstanding international artists. Since April 2008, Treetops CMS brings to the area some of the most talented young chamber musicians in the country through its J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition, taking place at the University of Connecticut Stamford Campus. During the 2008-09 season Treetops CMS will launch its Treetops@UConn lunchtime concert series; will present its first commission, from Stamford-based prize-winning composer Cristina Spinei; and will include art exhibits during some of its concert dates, starting with an art exhibit by Louis Schanker. Treetops CMS outreach includes “Music and Nature at Treetops”, a program for area public school children that incorporates hands-on enriching experiences in music and nature in collaboration with Sound Waters.

J. C. ARRIAGA CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION
2008 J. C. ARRIAGA CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION WINNERS

Concert performance plays an irreplaceable role in the education of young artists, and chamber music performance is at the center of creative music education. For the young J. C. Arriaga playing the violin in various chamber music ensembles was the only school at the time he composed his first opera. He later would enter the illustrious Paris Conservatory. Although Arriaga was a classical composer deserving a prominent place in history, his music wasn’t played widely in international circles until fairly recently. It took the tenacious support of many institutions and music organizations to make Arriaga’s international appreciation possible. In a very similar way, today’s most deserving young chamber ensembles need the support of music organizations to jumpstart their careers. That is why “to complement the musical education of young artists” is part of the mission of the Treetops Chamber Music Society which, inspired by the example of Arriaga, is set to assist most deserving young chamber musicians through its J. C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition starting in the spring of 2008.
