RAVEL String Quartet in F major
BEETHOVEN String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131

This program concludes the spring 2017 late-Beethoven cycle at Treetops CMS with the quartet Op. 131, Beethoven’s own favorite among his quartets. This is also the quartet that Schubert requested to hear on his deathbed, a wish that was fulfilled and later described by a member of the performing string quartet as: “The King of Harmony had sent the King of Song a friendly bidding to the crossing” (J. M. Keller). On the other hand, Ravel’s string quartet, dedicated to his teacher, Gabriel Fauré, completes the French chapter of the season. The American String Quartet, now on its 41st season, is one of the world’s foremost quartets. The New York Times describes their playing as “luxurious” and “beautifully sculptured.”
