The Manhattan-based Cassatt String Quartet, “an extraordinary quartet” (The New York Times) and a Treetops CMS regular, returns for a grand finale with greatly influential works by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. Pianist Magdalena Baczewska has been acclaimed as a “world-class” musician (The American Record Guide) and “eloquent and technically flawless” (The Washington Post).
Schumann’s piano quintet was first in this medium and set the ground for other major piano quintets by Brahms, Dvorak, Franck… Beethoven’s “La Malinconia,” the last quartet in his debut set of six quartets Op. 18, is a fascinating work because it already starts to challenge the Classical forms, hinting at the revolution that his late quartets brought about. Mozart’s late quartet K. 575, written for the King of Prussia, who was an accomplished cellist, is a buoyant and graceful quartet, and a remarkable instance in which a gravely ill composer resorted to write sublime and happy music despite his circumstances.
