Deemed “superheroes of the new music world” (Boston Globe), the award-winning JACK Quartet will kick off the second decade of Treetops CMS concerts with a series of diverse musical explorations into American music, ending the program with a classic from overseas: Iannis Xenakis’ Tetras, considered “one of the most original (…) contributions to the string quartet genre” (J. Harley, AllMusic). Some of the music in this program is hot off the press, such as Derek Bermel’s Intonations, a 92nd Street Y commission premiered this past May at the beginning of the 2016 NY Phil Biennial. The program includes two outstanding American women composers: Ruth Crawford Seeger, an influential modernist, and Julia Wolfe, winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
